In a move to enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways is piloting installation of automated teller machines (ATM) onboard trains – marking a first for the national transporter. The pilot was introduced on the Mumbai – Manmad Panchavati Express, a popular intercity train connecting Mumbai to Nashik.
“In a first, #ATM facility in train,” Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railways Minister, wrote on social media platform X. The Minister also shared a video of the ATM and how it has been placed at a repurposed cubicle at the rear of an AC Chair Car coach thereby ensuring optimal space utilisation.
The ATM, is a joint effort with the Bank of Maharashtra under the Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS) – wherein Railways will look to shore up revenues from other avenues beyond passenger fares.
The trial aims to address the practical need for passengers who may require cash during their journey. Coach modifications were carried out to ensure the setting up of the ATM inside coach. P, transforming a former makeshift pantry space into a modern banking facility.
The Panchavati Express shares its route with the Mumbai-Hingoli Janshatabdi Express and long-distance passengers to Hingoli will also benefit from the ATM when the train operates on that route. If the service gains traction, Indian Railways plans to expand it to other major trains, those in the know said.
