In a bid to tap demand for solar modules in the US, Gujarat-based Kosol Energie Pvt Ltd is looking to invest ₹300 crore for setting up a 2-GW solar module manufacturing facility there.

“US president Donald Trump wants manufacturing to be done in the United States, so we have zeroed down on a location for setting up a 2 GW solar module manufacturing facility with an investment of ₹300 crore. We have been in the hospitality business in the US since 1991, and we understand the local market,” said Kalpesh Kalthia, CMD of the company, which has a 3.1 GW solar module manufacturing facility at Bavla near Ahmedabad that exports to the US market.

Kalthia Group Hotels is a privately-managed hotel management company based in San Diego, California, which specialises in development, operation and management of premier hotel brands like Hilton, Hampton Inn, InterContinental, Marriott and Wyndham brands.

“We are waiting for the US government’s final decision after the 90-day tariff pause ends in July. We have identified land and the building, but we do not wish to give away the location yet,” Kalthia added. The company is also expanding its solar manufacturing unit in Bavla to an additional 3 GW with an investment of ₹250 crore. This will take the total manufacturing capacity to 6.1 GW. The company currently imports the solar cells needed for the solar modules from China and Indonesia.

Order book of ₹3,200 crore

Last year, the company had a turnover of ₹800 crore of which exports accounted for 5-7 per cent of the total turnover. “We are currently exporting very niche solar modules – of which the majority is to the US. Currently, we have an order book of over ₹3,200 crore of which a significant portion is for delivery to the US. However, the large orders from the US are currently on hold due to the concerns related to tariff. The order pipeline will be re-validated once the Trump administration takes a final call on the tariffs,” the official added.

In April, Kosol Energie bagged a 400 MW PV module supply order through Zetwerk for NTPC’s 1.6 GW Khavda Solar Project in Gujarat. The solar module manufacturer is looking to set up battery cell and battery pack manufacturing plant for which it is scouting for land in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
