A study by Kantar, which analysed 157 micro cluster across the top nine metros of the country, revealed that south-west Bengaluru is the most premium FMCG cluster, while West Delhi clusters were seen making the highest household spends in this category.

The analysis, which excludes atta as a category, noted that the granular realities of India metros indicate there are stark differences in consumption patterns at micro-cluster levels.

Bengaluru is the most premium metro in the country when it comes to FMCG spends. The average city level spend per kg of FMCG products is pegged at ₹211. But with ₹227 spent on every kg of FMCG on an average, south-west Bengaluru comprising RR Nagar, Mysore Road, and Kengeri, emerged as the most premium FMCG micro-cluster among the top nine metros.

“The cluster spends ₹651 per kg on personal hygiene products, nearly 1.2 times more than other important clusters like Koramangala or Indira Nagar. In fact, home hygiene also has a similar 1.3X skew in the cluster compared to both these regions, indicating that this cluster is big on hygiene,” the Kantar report noted.

key factor

Convenience emerged as the key factor driving the spends on premium products, with south-west Bengaluru households paying 20 per cent higher per kg on products such as ready-to-cook mixes and ready-to-eat foods. They were also seen spending more on premium talcum powder and deodorants.

Of the seven clusters in India that consume more than 200 kgs of FMCG annually, six are in Delhi and one in Hyderabad. Leading the pack is the South Delhi cluster encompassing Okhla, Kalkaji, Lajpat Nagar, and Bhogal, with a “staggering 240 kgs consumed per year”. This is double the national average (119 kgs excluding atta). This cluster spends least on snacking products, but more on edible oils, basmati rice and bottled soft drinks.

However, West Delhi cluster comprising Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri, Sagarpur, and Vikaspuri has the highest FMCG spends. “While the average FMCG household spends close to ₹19,000 per annum on FMCG, as tracked by Kantar, West Delhi cluster spends more than twice that at ₹39,325,” the report added. Salty snacks, spices, basmati rice, sauces, ketchups and soft drinks are among the key categories.

GDSC mumbai

Households in the GDSC corridor in Mumbai purchase FMCG in 233 visits compared to 128 visits made by average urban Indian households, and 135 visits made by average Mumbai households. This corridor comprises localities such as Dharavi, Bandra East, Khar East, Santacruz East, Dawri Nagar, and Prabhat Colony.

“This corridor is unique in the country. Their 233 visits in a year means that every visit on an average happens once in 37 hours and, hence, their engagement with FMCG products is significantly higher than anywhere in the urban part of India. What more, in every visit they spend only ₹93 on FMCG and just 541 gms per visit,” the Kantar report added.
