As the first semiconductor fab unit of Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) takes shape at Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) – located about 110 km from Ahmedabad city – the Gujarat government has allocated 10 acres to the Tata Group for construction of residential apartments for their employees and workers.

“The government has given 10 acres to Tata Group for developing their own housing complex. Initially, they will build more than 500 apartments,” said Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary, Science and Technology Department, Gujarat Government. Housing and other social infrastructure are key for Dholera SIR which is being developed as a greenfield smart city in Ahmedabad district.

Apart from the land given to Tata Group for constructing residences, Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd (DICDL) has auctioned plots to private developers for constructing an additional 1,000 service-apartments in this region that has a scant population and consists of flat coastal plains.

Semicon projects

There are at least three semiconductor projects that are expected to come up in Dholera SIR. This includes a ₹91,000-crore mega semiconductor fabrication facility, which is being constructed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), providing 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs in the region. According to the Gujarat government, TEPL project is scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 2027-28.

“TEPL has already started construction of the plant at Dholera,” Khandhar said, adding that even electronics manufacturing services providers like Jabil Inc will soon begin construction of their manufacturing facility at Dholera. Jabil Inc had signed an MoU with Gujarat government for a ₹1,000-crore silicon photonics manufacturing facility. This project is expected to create 1,500 new jobs. NextGen has also signed an MoU with State government to set up a ₹10,000 crore compound semiconductor fab and opto electronics facility at Dholera. Hitachi from Japan and Solidlite from Taiwan are the two other partners in this proposed project.
