Sajjan Jindal-led JSW group on Monday said it will try to bring Japanese and Korean companies at its proposed Salboni industrial park in West Bengal as many of these companies are looking for a “home” amid US-China tariff tussle.
The proposed park, that aims to provide plug-and-play facilities to industries, will be set up alongside the 1,600 MW thermal power plant. JSW Energy commenced construction of the (2×800 MW) ultra supercritical thermal power plant in Salboni in the State’s West Medinipur district.
“We are trying to attract Japanese and Korean companies to set up units in the industrial park here. Especially after the US-China spat that is going on now, lots of Korean and Japanese industries, which are in China and export to the US, are looking for a home for themselves. We are going to attract them here,” JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal told reporters on the sidelines of the power project’s foundation stone-laying ceremony.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unveiled the foundation plaque for the power project, entailing an investment of ₹16,000 crore.
Jindal said Japanese and Korean companies operating in electronics, electrical, refrigerator, transformers, cell phone batteries, and chemicals among others can be attracted to the 2000-acre industrial park, which would be a model one in the country.
He said the the group has a plan to set up two more power units with 800 MW each in Salboni.
The greenfield power project is JSW Group’s first venture into the energy sector in Eastern India. “This is a landmark project. I must congratulate the Jindal Group and all their officials,” Banerjee said at the event.
The Chief Minister described the project as a “special type of eco-friendly initiative” and termed it “the need of the hour.” As many as 23 districts will benefit from this initiative, she added.
