Making its foray in LED lighting and BLDC fans, Luker India is set to enter into the burgeoning wires and cable business.

The launch of wires and cables is likely to be by the end of this month initially with a focus on South India. The production has already started at the Coimbatore manufacturing facility where the company has made an investment of ₹150 crore. Actor Prabhudeva has been roped in as the brand ambassador for the new product, said Jothish Kumar V, Managing Director, Luker Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd.

In an interaction with businessline, he said the wires and cable market in India is estimated at ₹35,000 crore, thanks to increasing consumption in rural areas where the development is happening at a faster pace.

Luker India intends to take 15,000 electricians and 1,400 dealers from South India at its Coimbatore production facility to create awareness on the latest developments in cables and wires. There are also plans to reach out to over lakh retailers to sell wires and cables, he added.

The cable manufacturing process has become easier now with the adoption of AI where the consistency was high at 99.99 per cent compared to 98.3 per cent earlier due to human errors, he said.

Luker India was formed in 2015 with ₹2-crore investment for the manufacturing of LED lightings. The company has clocked a turnover of ₹500 crore in FY25 by adding BLDC fans in the production line up. “We expect that the lighting and fan business will grow at 20-25 per cent every year,” Jothish Kumar said.

On the competition from China in LED lighting, the Managing Director said the government’s strict regulations has helped vanish 90 per cent of traders who sell cheaper and low quality products. However, India is still dependent on China for manufacturing certain products like capacitors, IC’s, etc, where the production was in bulk volumes and at much reduced prices.

“The implementation of PLI schemes has reduced dependency on China by almost 50 per cent for major Indian manufacturing companies. The time has come for India to compete with China to become a manufacturing hub for other countries”, Jothish Kumar said.

“The challenge now is declining product prices while manufacturing cost remains at the same level”, he said, citing the rates of LED bulbs from ₹320 in 2015 to ₹30 and for tubes from ₹2,850 to ₹80.

However, the market is huge in India especially with the shifting of 95 per cent of the lighting in segments such as commercial, street lighting to LED. Besides, the Centre has made mandatory LED lighting and BLDC fans in government offices due to low energy consumption, competitive pricing and long life.

Jothish Kumar also said that Luker India is planning an IPO in 2027 when the turnover reaches ₹1,000 crore. The figure, this year, will be at ₹850 crore.
