Mahindra expands design capabilities to speed up new vehicle launches

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has expanded its automobile design capabilities with more manpower and technologies as it looks to speed up its offerings across passenger and commercial vehicle segments.
The expanded design studio was unveiled at its Mumbai plant on Monday.
While the design function existed in the organisation ever since it launched the Scorpio brand, the design studio was launched in 2015. The facility has now been expanded and headcount doubled to 100. A new milling machine that converts digital sketches to physical clay models has been put in place. The facility also has it own paint shop.
These expansions are helpful for M&M to widen it’s SUV portfolio and launch new electric vehicles. This also helps the auto maker shorten the time taken between concept design to the commercial launch stage.
M&M also runs a design facility in the UK primarily used for electric vehicles.

“Technically products across companies are becoming similar. It is the same motor, same engine and batteries. It is the design and experience which differentiates models,” explained Ajay Saran Sharma Senior Vice President & Head (Mahindra India Design Studio).
Sharma said that M&M is also exploring how to use artificial intelligence to quicken some of the design stage processes and improve execution.
“The new studio will attract the best design talent from India and become a leading automotive design centre in India. The influence of the design studio on our products will be felt for many years to come,” added M&M’s Chief Design and Creative Officer, Pratap Bose.
