Dry cell battery major Eveready Industries said its upcoming greenfield alkaline battery plant in Jammu will position the company as the only domestic manufacturer in this fast growing segment.
The company expects to commence commercial operations of the plant by this fiscal-end.
“We will continue to strengthen our long-term competitive edge with the upcoming greenfield alkaline battery facility in Jammu – India’s first of its kind. On track for completion by end of FY25-26, this plant will position us as the only domestic manufacturer in this fast growing segment,” Eveready Industries Managing Director Suvamoy Saha stated in the company’s annual report for financial year 2024-25.
According to the annual report, the alkaline battery manufacturing line will be one of the most advanced globally, ensuring superior efficiency and product consistency.
The company has planned for an outlay in a strategic investment of ₹180 crore to set up the facility at Jammu, which will have a production capacity of 360 million units of alkaline batteries. This initiative marks the first alkaline battery manufacturing plant in India, aiming at enhancing operational efficiencies and supporting the expansion of Eveready’s Ultima Pro and Ultima ranges. The company expects that the plant would reduce reliance on imports.
“The facility is being aimed for commissioning towards the end of financial year 2025-26 and will eventually be developed into a multi-product facility,” it said.
“Our brand refresh and increased marketing investment are gaining traction. The re-launch of our alkaline battery range and renewed positioning of the entire range of batteries are resonating well with consumers. Battery sales remained resilient throughout the year, with the alkaline segment showing strong volume gains and market share expansion, reinforcing our overall leadership in this category,” Saha said.
The company, in the annual report, said alkaline batteries are witnessing rapid adoption as the market moves towards high drain devices with battery applications. “Our brand refresh last year around Eveready Ultima Pro and Eveready Ultima, has had a notable positive impact, propelling the alkaline battery sales to a significant 65.3 per cent growth in financial year 2024-25 year-over-year,” it said. Consequently, the company’s volume market share in the alkaline battery category substantially rose to 14.8 per cent last fiscal.
During the last financial year the company’s revenue from operations stood at ₹1,343.92 crore as against ₹1,314.16 crore in the previous financial year.
