Ajay Singh sets up new venture for seaplane operations
SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh plans to introduce seaplane service in India under the SkyHop brand in the next few months.
The seaplane operations will not be part of SpiceJet. Singh has applied to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for a scheduled commuter operator permit to run the service.
Singh’s plans to reintroduce seaplane service follow introduction of new guidelines last August. Requirements for setting up of water aerodromes were eased and qualification requirements for seaplane pilots were relaxed.
Fresh bids
The government has also invited fresh bids for seaplane routes under its Ude Desh Ka Aam Aadmi scheme. Previously 50 seaplane routes were awarded under the Udan scheme but these didn’t take off.
Infrastructure too is being readied for seaplane services. For instance, terminal facilities are being developed at three locations in Andaman & Nicobar islands.
SpiceJet did not respond to an email query.
Sources said preparatory work is underway and SkyHop Aviation has leased one Twin Otter amphibian aircraft. Pilots are being hired and team is being put in place to run the service. The Sky Hop venture is being led by Singh’s daughter Avani.
Last November SpiceJet had partnered with plane maker De Havilland in seaplane trials across multiple locations. At the time De Havilland had expressed hope India will have around ten seaplanes in service soon.
SpiceJet had introduced a seaplane service linking Sabaramati river front in Ahmedabad with Statue of Unity in Kevadia in October 2020. However the operations were suspended within a few months citing Covid-19 restrictions.
