Speculations of a possible alliance between the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab were put to rest on Tuesday after BJP state President Sunil Jakhar announced that the saffron party would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls alone in the state.
“This decision was taken based on the opinion of the people, party workers in the state,” Jakhar said adding, “The works done by the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are not hidden from anyone.”

Punjab will go to polls with its 13 seats on June 1.
A possible rerun between the Bhartiya Janata Party and SAD has been in the talks since last year and Jakhar’s recent announcement has come as a surprise to many, especially after reports suggested that the two parties held seat-sharing talks for the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2020, SAD broke away from the alliance with BJP over the passing of farm laws. In the last general elections in 2019, both SAD and BJP won two seats each.
“The Kartarpur corridor, for which people have been requesting for decades, was also made possible under PM Modi because of the blessings of Waheguru,” Jakhar further said.
